Today In History: Molly Holly Wins Her First Women’s Championship (June 23, 2002)

On this day in history, 18 years ago, Molly Holly won her first Women’s title by defeating Trish Stratus at 2002 King of the Ring PPV. Ever since debuting her new look and attitude, Molly Holly swore to defeat Stratus and make the women’s division pure and wholesome again. Holly dominated most of the match, but Stratus got control and began using some of her signature moves on Holly. Holly regained the momentum and delivered a belly to belly suplex. Holly went on to pin Stratus while grabbing Stratus’ tights to win the title. This would be the first of the two Women’s title reigns for Holly. In addition, she had previously won the Hardcore title at WrestleMania X8, earlier that year.
